Next up in our series of ‘meet the team’ blogs we head north to Birmingham to meet Alessandro Scaringi to ask: what on earth are you doing outside of EC1?!
Alessandro, why are you in Birmingham?
Well, I joined the ThinkersConnect London team two years ago but we very quickly recognised a need to respond to the growing digital community outside of London and here I am in Birmingham! We set up our first regional office here in June and I am now Practice Lead for the Midlands and the North of England.
OK, so what are your plans?
There has been an incredible growth in digital tech outside of London year on year to 2016. In fact 80% of digital companies are now based outside of London and we wanted to respond quickly to this. We are already partnering with a number of fantastic companies in high growth tech hubs outside of London and have experienced some considerable wins so far.
And who do you have with you in the Birmingham office?
We’re a small team but, whilst we want to secure a great regional presence, we want to grow this operation properly. Many recruiters have a ‘bums on seats’ mentality but, for us, it’s about finding the right people with the right attitude. We want to connect with people who are up for the challenge of being part of our growth.
Currently, we have Tom Sykes, our first hire, who is a Principal Consultant. With vast recruitment experience and, as someone who has always worked in the Midlands, he has a fantastic understanding of requirements in this territory. Then there’s Sam Hogan, Researcher. Coming from a very creative background (he originally set up a clothing brand!); Sam brings a fresh perspective which is totally in line with ThinkersConnect’s disruptive approach. He can speak to creative digital people with ease and has already shown his knack for spotting talent and consulting with hiring managers.
Are there any key differences between London and Birmingham in terms of your approach?
Yes. In London there are a lot of large digital companies we work with as well as start-ups. Here we’re dealing with a large number of digital SMEs. Whilst the start-up culture here isn’t as mature as in London, this is very quickly changing and there are more and more exciting businesses appearing all the time.
In addition to that, we’re ideally placed to help the many digital companies who are moving out of London and setting up lower cost development centres – our insight into the London tech scene gives us a unique opportunity to engage with these businesses too.
Alessandro, that sounds incredibly exciting and we wish you luck building your team and your client base across the Midlands and the North. Keep us posted on life outside of EC1!
